  • Looking for details regarding family of Thomas LUCAS & Louise Frances COOPER
  • Posted by Robina Dexter on March 12th 2004
  • I'm looking for the marriage of Thomas LUCAS born 1919 or 1925 in Llangurig, Montgomery and Louisa Frances COOPER born 1839 or 1841 in Ryde Isle of Wight. The first child of whom I have a record (1871 census) is also called Thomas LUCAS born c. 1859. I can find no record of his birth either. By 1871 the family is living in Islington where all the 12 children found so far were born and where both Thomas and Louisa died in 1891 and 1912 respectively. (I have death certs.) ... LUCAS offspring: Thomas (1859); Edward (1860); Ernest (1863); Emily (1864); Florence (1866 - married Noel CHEESEWRIGHT 1886, but was a widow in 1901 census); Sydney (1870 - married Rhoda/Rhode, who became an LCC councillor and campaigned against turnstile entrances in ladies' toilets!); Albert (1873); Minnie (1873 - twin to Albert?); Winifred (1875 - married Richard TARRY 1895. She died in 1962); Edith (1870 - possibly the twin of my Grandmother Amy Gertrude, who married James BALLS...their children also born in Islington and, finally, Grace (1881). However, I always understood there to have been 18 little LUCAS’...does anyone know about any more?
  • I have photos of Thomas LUCAS and Louisa COOPER, but have searched the PRO microfiche to no avail to find their marriage and, therfore, their ancestors. I have found references to a Ted LUCAS, boxer of Islington, but doubt if he be the above Edward - but I'd be happy to be contradicted. If anyone out there knows anything, regarding descendants of any of the children listed, it would be much appreciated. Thank you, Robina Dexter

  • Looking for information regarding Ambrose WILLIAMS born 1725 in England or Wales?
  • Posted by Clydene W Cannon on March 4th 2004
  • I'm looking for ancestors or living descendants of Ambrose WILLIAMS, born 1725 - probably in England but of Welsh lineage.  A deed of land in Wight County Virginia (USA) states that Ambrose WILLIAMS was granted land there along with Richard KERBY (or KERLEY).  It reads, in part "To be held of us, our heirs and successors as of our Manor at East Greenwich in the County of Kent in free and Common Soccage and not in cople or by Knight's Service". I am unable to find the location of this WILLIAMS/KERBY/KERLEY Manor but assume it, certainly, was in England.  Any help will be appreciated and would delight in corresponding with anyone who descends from Ambrose WILLIAMS or Richard KERLEY from county of Kent in England.

He lived on Back Lane, Shevington, until the age of four when he went to live with family friends the 'Blundells', also in Wrightington; his mother had died & left his father with five young children to look after. I have no more details and I am longing to fill the gap in my family tree. I would be very pleased to hear from anyone who knows anything about Mark, his life and his descendants.

  • Looking for ancestors or descendants of James BRINDLEY (the Canal Engineer) & his children
  • Posted by Nicole Brindley on 20th February 2004 (see next entry also)
  • I am trying to trace descendants of James BRINDLEY the Canal engineer or his two daughters. I also believe he had a son ... so I’d be grateful if anyone knows any details surrounding his son John BENNETT? I realize that anyone who has the name BRINDLEY thinks they are a descendant of James but this is impossible because he only had two daughters with the famous surname name and both married and had children under their married name.  However James BRINDLEY had a son, named John BENNETT, and his life and birth seems to be a mystery. I have found out that John BENNETT’s ancestors seem to have claimed fame themselves in the way of the famous writer Arnold BENNETT. I am very interested in anyone who is a BRINDLEY, or a BENNETT (or both) or anyone who just has a missing piece to the puzzle; we can’t all be related to him surely. Please some one throw some light on this for me. Thanks Nicole.

  • Posted by Sarah Hurt on February 6th 2004
  • I have just purchased my first house and was amazed when I received a letter from an 82 year old lady who was born here. She moved away with her parents to Yorkshire in the 1930's and lost all contact with her relatives living in the area.  She has asked if I know them or anything about them so I decided to have a go at finding something out for her. Her grandparents owned the house on Whittington Hill in Old Whittington at that time and their surname was FOYSTER.  Her uncle lived next door name of FOYSTER & her cousins names are Ronnie, Fred, Olive and Winifred FOYSTER.  Another cousin is Tommy GAMBLE. If anyone has any information I would be grateful if you could provide it as I would like to reply to the letter and make an old lady happy.
