  • Looking for the Ancestors or Descendants of William Henry WEBB
  • Posted by Sue Ford on the 14th December 2002
  • I recently discovered that my Father who died in 1955 had 2 half brothers but have no clue as to the whereabouts of any of their possible descendants. The 2 people concerned were as follows: Henry (Fre) WEBB, born 1865 & Frederick WEBB born 1870 (Both found living at 5 Newmans Yard Bristol for the night of the 1881 census). Both are the sons of William Henry WEBB who was born in Shepton Mallet in 1841. The Mother of the 2 sons is not known at all and the info I have was gleaned from the 1881 census. Any help at all would be much appreciated and all mail will be answered. Thank you. Sue Ford (Nee Webb)

My grand father George HOLT married Sarah E. HUDSON & they had six children that survived but two died in infancy, one of the children who died was born out of wed lock. John HOLT moved to Hull, then from Hull moved on to Keighley, West Yorkshire. Lastley, there was talkm from one of my Great Aunts, that we are desended from the HOLTS of Norfolk, where there is a place called HOLT. I would be so greatful for any information, Many thanks .... • Looking for STITCHCOMB family records
  • Posted by Vivian Thompson on the 4th Oct 2002
  • I am doing a one name study of STINCHCOMB.  My Grandma was Bertha Stinchcomb & was born in Liverpool, West Derby and thought it would be nice to know more about the Stinchcomb family. This earliest Stinchcomb of this line that I came across was John Henry, on some documents I have Henry John who married a Sarah Purdy in November 1820.  He moved back to England, then onto Scotland.  Their son Henry William, his wife Janet Cunningham and at least two children moved back to Liverpool where William Henry and his wife Elizabeth Rowland Copestake had more children. Eventually, William came to Canada in 1912 with his sons while his wife and daughters came in 1914. Any contact from interested people or decendents are more than welcome to add their information and I will share what I have. Thanks Vivian

  • Looking for information regarding Winnifred Grace MURRELL / MURREL
  • Posted by Maureen Pepin on the 17th September 2002
  • We are looking for the birth family or adopted family of my grandmother, Winnifred Grace MURRELL (MURREL), born September 1893 or 1894. She had no brothers or sisters as far as we know.  Her birth father's name was Frederick Chas. MURRELL (who was a sea captain), and her mother was Louise HINGSTON (or HINGETON), they were not married.  Our grandmother
remembers living in the Twickenham/Teddington areas with her upper-class adopted family, as she remembered having a cook and governess in the home. She immigrated to Ontario, Canada when she was about 18, and married John KYLE and lived in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Her children remember receiving numerous packages from England.  The 1901 census records have failed to turn up anything so our information is scarce. I would very much like to hear from anyone who has any information regarding these people. Regards, Maureen Pepin
  • Looking for information regarding the KNIGHT family of Sutton-cum-Lound, Notts.
  • Posted by Sandra Turner on the 16th September 2002
  • I am searching for the KNIGHT family, seemingly from the Sutton-cum-Lound/East Retford area, from 1800 back.  I have Peter KNIGHT (shoemaker) married Mary DALE (1808) and have names of Peter's parents (John -bap. 1754- & Mary, married c.1777)  and presumably, grandparents
(Thomas-bap. 1714-& Susanna LEVERIT, marr. 1737).  All these of Sutton cum Lound. The trouble I have encountered is the number of KNIGHT ancestors in the area, and linking them in the correct order.  I have used the IGI so must link 'suitable' ages and dates.  This doesn't necessarily give the true result.  If someone else can compare notes, I could sort my families out.  Also wondered if anyone had or knew of any documentation, records, of a social nature for the 18th century in that area as I would be very interested. I like to know how my ancestors lived as well as just having names. Thank you, Sandra Turner
  • Looking for ancestors of George Edwin GAMMON & wife Mary (nee POWELL) of Nottingham
  • Posted by Gayla Phillips on the 15th September 2002
  • Looking for ancestors or family members of my Great-grandparents: George Edwin GAMMON born May 03,1866 at Nottingham ... & Mary (nee POWELL) born October 02,1866 (I think she was born in Nottingham also). Great-grandfather GAMMON was a jeweler, moved his family to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania ,U.S.A. sometime around 1905 or after. Owned a jewelry store in Philadelphia from 1917-1929. Store was called George E. Gammon Jewelry. He and Mary had, I think two boys, one named Ben (?), other named Bill, three girls, one who was my Grandmother - Florence GAMMON (born September 19,1898), who married my Grandfather, Hugh Melian McCAIN in Philadelphia September 20,1919. One of her sisters drowned in a boating accident when she was of dating age (age unknown) .I think this was at Philadelphia. Great-grandfather GAMMON gave my Grandmother & Grandfather a beautiful Mantel clock as a wedding gift, which I understand was from his jewelry store. I am trying to trace out my family tree and don't have very much info on the GAMMON side. I would like to find out what county they were from, something about their home address, before they moved, and any thing else pertaining to them. Any help would be appreciated. I can be reached at my email address, or at my home address at: Gayla McCain Phillips, P.O. Box  99, Ivanhoe, Texas 75447. U.S.A.

  • I am looking for William SNOW (or SNOWE) b. 1617-1624.
  • Posted by Elizabeth Snow on the 18th July 2002 & Re-Posted 9th August 2002
  • I am looking for links to William SNOW(E) who sailed from England to the colonies in America on the "Susan and Ellen (or Ellin)" in May, 1635. He was listed as being 18 years old, but the Plymouth records state that he was actually 11. Richard Derby arranged his trip and he came as an apprentice or bond servant. He may have been the son of Nicholas SNOW of London who was married at St. Martins, Westminster. Other accounts mention he was from Dorset, and yet another says he was born in Inkburrow, Worchester. William was the founder of my family line in America, and prior to his appearance on that passenger list I can find nothing. One member of the Snow line believes that he was brother to a Nicholas Snow who sailed on the "Anne" in 1623. Any help would be appreciated. Sincerely, Elizabeth Snow
  • Update August 9th 2002 - William was most likely born about 1624 and I have a strong feeling he was from Dorset. He was brought to the Plymouth Plantation by Richard Derby (or Darby) who was from Dorset. Derby does not seem to have been a resident of the Colony. He also brought John Chipman a cousin who apparently did stay. John Chipman was born in Dorset. There are many listings in the LDS site which seem to refer to the same person but the village names and counties seem mixed up. For instance, Bryant's Puddle, Bryan's Piddle, Brinspittle, Dorchester, Dorset. Richard Derby may have died in England. At least one son became a colonist. If anyone has these two in their lines it might help me find a connection to William. Sincerely, Elizabeth Snow.

She had an illegitimate son Samuel born in 1733, Kniveton, Derbyshire. At the age of 21 he married Jane PRATT (daughter of Thomas PRATT & Winifred LEACH, Jane was born in 1733 in Ellastone, Stafordshire. Samuel & Jane married on 10th December 1754... and they had 10 children: (i) John. Born in 1759 in Kniverton, Derbyshire.  (ii) Thomas (1756-1829) (iii) Samuel 1762. Born in 1762 in Kniverton, Derbyshire. (iv) Jane (1765-) (v) Sarah (1761-) (vi) William. Born in 1767 in Kniverton, Derbyshire. (vii) Mary (1769-) (viii) Ann. Born in 1776 in Kniverton, Derbyshire. (ix) Hannah. Born in 1778 in Kniverton, Derbyshire. (x) Samuel 1772. Born in 1772 in Kniverton, Derbyshire. I can trace the direct line down through Thomas (ii) but any information on the other children would be appreciated. Mary OSBISTONE married John FROST on 13 May 1741, in Kniveton, Derbyshire. He was married at Fowlmere Church, 19 Jul 1814 to Mary Ann LODGE, born 1796, daughter of either William or Robert LODGE and Mary LODGE, of Fowlmere. Joseph may have died in Oulton, Suffolk, in 1886, and may have owned at the time of his death "Victoria Villa, near Mittford Bridge, Oulton". He married Joanna ADAMS at Newbury Massachusetts. She emigrated with her parents & siblings from Devon. Her parents were Robert ADAMS & Elinor WILMOT. There has been much speculation about Lancelot's parentage but nothing has been verified. If we knew which ship he sailed on we might find evidence. All that is known was that he was checked at St Antholin's Parish, Budge Row London. My husband is a direct descendent of Lancelot's line. Thank you for any insight you may have. Sheila Granger

  • I am looking for the parents and siblings of JOHN SMITH, born "in England in 1745"
  • Posted by MaryLu McClure on the 9th July 2002
  • I am looking for the parents and siblings of John SMITH, born "in England in 1745", who settled in the Town of Manchester, Bennington County, VT, USA. Also with him was his sister, Martha SMITH, who married a HART (unknown where). Her second husband was Thomas BULL who also lived in Manchester, VT. (And possibily also a brother, Stephen SMITH, who married Martha BULL?) It is believed John SMITH married Mary BULL in about 1770 in Dutchess County, NY, USA, before moving on to Bennington County, VT. To complicate matters, it appears that there were at least three John SMITHS residing in early Bennington County (but only our John SMITH was in the Town of Manchester in 1791 and 1800). One of these John SMITHS had a wife "Mary". He served as a Captain in the Revolutionary War. On his military record he stated he was from "Hertfordshire (St. John), England. Could this be our John SMITH? Sorry, I have nothing more to go on. This is the only clew I have had to work with for 27 years! Thanks... MaryLu McClure in Minnesota, U.S.A.
