  • Looking for information regarding the CROOKS & COLBY surnames.
  • Posted by Gordon Leigh Crooks II on the 19th March 2003
  • I know I am related to the COLBY family (Pilgrims), but other family oral history tells us we are of English/ Scotch descent. I have a family bible record, for a 1699 burial at Chamberburg, Franklyn County, Pennsylvania, which is for a male CROOKS; the entry does not give a forename or details regarding where he came from ... we think perhaps this male was of British ancestry. The only possible clue I have, is that when I visited England (some years ago) I noticed the name CROOKS in the border counties and the Edinburgh area. The Scottish telephone book had pages and pages of entries for the CROOKS sunames. I would really love to hear from anyone who knows anything about any CROOKS folk, who came over the the USA around this time. Or anyone who think they may be able to help me. I look forward to hearing from you - Many Thanks, Gordon.

  • Looking for descendents of Elizabeth Ellen STONE > Fornham & Bury St. Edmunds areas
  • Posted by James Hart on the 12th February 2003
  • I would very much appreciate any help in tracing decendants of Elizabeth Ellen STONE who was born about 1859 in Fornham All Saints. Her parents are unknown. It is known that she had at least one son James Henry STONE who was born 08/11/1877, whilst Elizabeth was a domestic servant at 53 Canon Place, Bury St Edmunds - the childs father is unknown. It is not known if she had any other children....  but Elizabeth is sighted again in the 1881 census as a servant - living at 43 St Andrews, Bury St Edmunds and it seems likely that James was a boarder at 11 Finsbury Place, Whiting St., Bury St Edmunds. If anyone can fill in any of the gaps, however small, it would be great. Thank you ~ James Hart
  • Looking for family of Henry Horace TAYLOR & Alice (nee WILKINS) - Maud, Margaret & Wm.
  • Posted by Shirley Taylor on the 11th February 2003
  • I am looking for Maud TAYLOR b.circa 1889-90 & Margaret TAYLOR b.circa 1899-1900. Mother Alice nee WILKINS & father Henry Horace TAYLOR. They had a son as well - William b. July 1901 (my father in law) all were born in the Sutton Coldfield? Birmingham district. My father in law was born at 48 Regents Road Harborne, regisration district of Kings Norton. We know that family circumstances resulted in the family being put in a childrens home but were not sure why. My father in law remembered having a sister! but 1901 census reveals two! All efforts to find which Birmingham home they were in failed & no birth certs found either for Maud or Margaret. No marriage cert found either for Alice & Henry but have located an Alice WILKINS (Father Leonard) born 10th Dec 1871 at Sutton Coldfield, registration district Aston ... & this appears to tie-in with her age & birthplace from the 1901 census. We ...Williams daughter & myself, who are doing the research... have hit many brick walls during our research, so would be very pleased if the family details mean anything to Maud & Margarets descendents or any other branch of the Family. Look forward to hearing from anyone who has any details regarding these people, Thanks Shirley.
  • Looking for information regarding the THURGOOD / THOROGOOD family (Suffolk & Cambs)
  • Posted by Lesley Anderson on the 11th February 2003
  • I am researching my ancestor James THURGOOD - father Thomas and mother Susan (nee BEAVIS) born in Little Thurlow 1826. He had brothers John, Thomas and Elijah? also bapt. in Little Thurlow. James settled in Carlton, Cambridgeshire just over the border & married Mary HOWARD and it looks like there's quite a few THOROGOODS in Great Bradley, but can't find the connection. Apparently his father, Thomas THOROGOOD was born in Haverhill, as was his wife Susan. They were married at Haverhill in 1813. They don't appear in the 1861 census of Carlton or Gt. Bradley and there's another Thomas THOROGOOD who is baptising children of the same names, but he is married to SARAH in Haverhill! Wondering if there's anyone who can help sort this out! Thanks, Lesley Anderson in Ottawa, Ontario Canada. Researching THURGOOD/THOROGOOD, HOWARD, BEAVIS

  • Looking for WOODCOCK, MASON, CHITTOCK & death of Selina Julia A.H.F. WOODCOCK
  • Posted by Lynda Mitchell Reynolds on the 8th February 2003
  • I am the granddaughter of William Bill Joseph Mason (Woodcock) born September 18th, 1897 and the grand-niece of Kathleen Kitty Louisa Woodcock born August 28th, 1900 both in Boston, Linc. England.    Both had an older step sister Carrie (which I believe was short for Caroline) Elizabeth Woodcock who was also born in Boston in 1875.  Carries parents were William Woodcock, a publican born in Boston, Linc, England in 1844 and Mary Ann Simpson Woodcock also born in 1844 in Owlerton, York, England. In 1881 they resided at the Castle Tavern the corner of Church Street and Angel Court.
  • Mary Ann Simpson Woodcock died July 9, 1883 at the age 39.
  • William Woodcock had two brothers Charles, a fruit merchant born in Boston, Linc. England born in 1855 and Thomas Woodcock, a Seed Crusher born in Boston, Linc. England in 1860. They resided at 17 Lincoln Lane in 1881. The 1891 Census indicated that William Woodcock resided at The Jolly Crispin, West Street, Boston, Linc, England as publican.
  • My grandfather William Joseph Mason (Woodcock?) was born on September 18th, 1897 however, I have had difficulty finding his actual birth certificate, to date. The 1901 census  indicates that he was not in the household at that time, yet Kathleen Louisa is 6months old the day of the census. To date, the only person with a similar name to my grandfather had other named parents.
  • Selina Julia A.H.F. Mason born in 1875 married William Woodcock who was born in 1844 in Boston, Linc., England in March 1898. Kathleen Kitty Louisa Woodcock was born on August 28, 1900 at Boston, Linc. England.  Her parents are listed as Selina Julia A.H.F. Woodcock formerly Mason and William Woodcock.  William Woodcock died and was buried on November 27th, 1906 aged 62. Shortly thereafter on December 20th, 1906, both William Joseph Mason (Woodcock?) and Kathleen Louisa Woodcock were admitted to the Dr. Barnardos Home for Children.  Carrie the older sister aged 32 at the time had married Bert /Frank? Chittock who was a teacher.  As they had 4 children of their own it was extremely difficult to support William and Kathleen and so admission to Barnardos was sought.
  • Carrie Woodcock Chittock I understand lived in Nottingham and had  six children who I believe there names were Merl, Bob, Frank, Carrie, Flossie, Ivy and Louie. I am very interested in verifying who in fact were my grandfathers parents and what happened to Selina following  William and Kathleens admission to the home in 1906.  Selina was only 32.  What did the A.H.F. stand for?   I am also very interested in who the descendents of William Woodcocks brothers were as well as the older step sister Carries family. I would be very interested in any information that anyone may have on any of these families.    I did attend the FRO in London to try to find out more. I did locate Selina and her family in the 1881 and 1901 Census and also I obtained her marriage certificate to William Woodcock but nothing after that -- she may have remarried. In the 1901 Census she was going by the name of Florence which could have been part of the AHF??  Thanks Lynda

  • Looking for ancestors and descendants of Martha Harriet LEE
  • Posted by JMI - [email protected] on the 2nd January 2003
  • I am looking for ancestors and descendants of Martha Harriet LEE born in Massachusetts USA abt 1864 - mother Elizabeth LEE of Belper (father unknown).Elizabeth LEE returned to Belper with children Martha Harriet and Robert Edward and in 1876 married William GLEWS a provision dealer (Grocer) both Harrriet and Robert worked as shop assistants. In 1893 Martha Harriet married Freeman RICE the son of John RICE and Emma (Swain) my greatgrandparents. The 1901 census shows Freeman RICE no longer a FWK but a Grocer-Shopkeeper but still in Belper. Any information about these families would be most welcome. I would imagine that an American accent in the early 1900s would be most noticeable and probably provide a clue.
