  • Looking for information regarding Jane Grace COLLEY & her descendants / ancestors
  • Posted by Philippa Wright on the 9th June 2002   [Go to: BAKER website]
  • I am trying to trace my gggrandmother.  She said she was called Jane Grace COLLEY. She had her first child circa 1890.  She married a farrier called William LANCASTER, and I believe she was outcast by her family because of this...or perhaps the child, Edith, was illegitimate.  She had another two children after that, a boy and a girl. She moved to London with her husband when she left home (they married in London), and lived over stables in Eton Place Chelsea, until her husband died.  Then her 'guardian', as she called him..perhaps a brother.....came and sent all 3 children to finishing school in Europe to'smarten them up'.  But Jane Grace herself did not want to return to her old middle class life, and moved to, probably, South East London.  She never remarried. Her son and daughter, under 'guardian's continued guidance, moved back to near Jane Grace's parents' home...perhaps in the Midlands?  Not sure. The brother and sister never married and lived together in a comfortable house until the 1970s I think, as Mr and Miss Lancaster, when they both died.
  • Jane Grace's eldest, my great great grandmother Edith, refused to be transferred from her finishing school in Paris to one in Germany; her 'Uncle' as she called him, presumably the 'guardian' told her that if she did not move schools he would wash his hands of her. She sent him a bar of soap. Edith married a soldier, Jasper BAKER, whom she met whilst on holiday staying with a schoolfriend in England, and Jasper stepped out of the bushes to stop her runaway dog cart, then started to call on her. They married in Paris, under the auspices of the woman who ran the finishing school there, Grandmere, no relation, but by then a great friend. Edith and Jasper had 2 children, my grandmother Anna Phyllis and Norma.  Anna Phllis married a soldier too, Cyril BACON, and had 3 children Elizabeth (Betty - my mother), Jasper and William (Bill).  Norma married a Jacques de GUINGAND and had two sons, Christopher and Robin. Does any of this ring a bell to you? Thanks and regards, Philippa Wright

  • Looking for information regarding Noah ELMER & Mary BATES
  • Posted by Kay Stevens the 16th May 2002
  • I am looking for my Great Great Grandfather, his name was Noah ELMER & he married Mary BATES on 8 November 1819 at Baldock in Hertfordshire. I have a son Robert ELMER born at Hitchin (baptised 1 June 1827), but I know that there were elder sons including a George born circa 1824 and a Frederick. There was also a son Noah born circa 1830 who married Mary YOUNG in 185, London & another son Frederick, born circa 1832, so I presume the first one died. My Great Grandmother, Catherine (the only girl) was born in 1840 in Westminster, London... by which time the surname was spely AYLMER, but have also seen it spelt ELMORE. I have found the family in London in the 1841 Census and father Noah and daughter Catherine in the 1861, but not able to find them at all in the 1851 Census. When Catherine married in 1862 her father was a witness, but he subsequently disowned her for marrying beneath her! The family bible has had the pages torn out which presumably had the AYLMER or ELMER details on them. In the 1861 Census Noah said he was born at Stamford in Lincolnshire, but those registers have been searched to no avail. I (plus several cousins on that line) have also not been able to find Noah's death (only that of Noah junior in 1861 and some of the other sons). If anyone can help with finding Noah's birth circa 1795 and/or his death after 1861, I would be eternally grateful. Sincerely Kay Stevens.

  • Parents and other ancestors of William BRANSON and Elizabeth BRECKNOCK
  • Posted by Shirley Cazier on 24th March 2002
  • William BRANSON was born out of wedlock to Ann BRANSON. Family records listed his father as Joseph BRANSON and mother as Elizabeth PERKINS. He listed his mother as Ann BRANSON and his father as James MOUNTNEY. He was born 5 Aug 1822 at Witwick, Leicestershire, England. On 24 Sep 1843 he married Elizabeth BRECKNOCK, born 8 Jul 1827, Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire, England. Her mother was Sarah BRECKNOCK, a spinster. She listed her father as Benjamin WALKER. It is possible that Joseph BRANSON and Elizabeth PERKINS were William's grandparents (parents of his mother Ann) and raised by them? I have not found a link; however, in one search I did find a daughter of Joseph BRANSON and Elizabeth PERKINS named Francis but I have not connected William or Ann to them. William BRANSON and Elizabeth BRECKNOCK were married in, and made their home in Hucknall Torkard, Notts... and raised a family of twelve children before emigrating to America. Sincerely and thank you, Shirley Cazier

Cooper married Lucy TALBOT in Soham, 1822 & one son was James ELSDEN (b.1830). James married Mary Jane (I think the surname was) GARDINER & they were hairdressers in Soham. One of their sons was William ELSDEN (b.1866) & he married Hannah HAZELWOOD in Coates 1892. My grandfather was their son - Arthur Edward ELSDEN who was born in Swaffam, 1903. William was a farm labourer & he worked & moved from farm to farm; all of their children were born in different villages, & he walked out on the family taking their youngest son with him. Hannah died in Fordam about 1935. Any information regarding any of the above mentioned (or their sibblings) would be greatly appreciated - also any info regarding the hairdressing shop & its location, would be greatfully recieved. Thank you Sylvia Back

  • Richard PASCOE & Family of Devonshire.
  • Posted by Jean Pasko on the 28th January 2002
  • I'm looking for Information on Richard Pascoe from Devonshire, England. He was born in March,1806 and he has a brother, Edward who was born in 1803. Richard worked from 1831-1835 for Thomas Carnsew and left their service in March,1835 to marry Ann Finemore. They came to America soon after. Richard became a naturalized citizen in 1840. When I search his brother, Edward, who we know married Mary and had 8 or 9 children, I believe I have found him in Familysearch.org but his brother Richard has the wrong dates on that site. Everything else is correct as far as the names of his children though. That site says his father was Michael Pascoe. I want to have more evidence that this is the "Richard and Edward" we are related to. Can anyone help with a marriage record in Poughill, Cornwall Co. for Ann and Richard or any other proof I might need. Sincerely, Jean Pasko
