  • Family of John CLARK & Catherine WINFIELD (Notts & Derbys)
  • Posted by robinpalachuk on 29th December 2001
  • I'm looking for information on the family of John CLARK & Catherine WINFIELD. John's father was William CLARK & I believe William's wife was Ann GREEN. John CLARK, of the parish of St Werburgh, gardener, and CATHARINE WINFIELD, were married April 26, 1761, at All Saints, Derby. John & Catharine had 6 children, my "original" Clark is Thomas - christened in 1774 in Arnold, Notts. Thomas' brothers & sisters: Catherine, Sarah, Elizabeth, John & Hannah (all born between 1762 & 1773 and all christened in Arnold, Notts). Thomas left England at approximately the age of 20 for the Caribbean Islands. I have Thomas' complete line from that point forward, but nothing on the siblings or the parents.

THOMAS PRIEST also brought his wife MARY nee MALTBY and a little daughter DEBORAH. JOHN PRIEST was a son of THOMAS PRIEST and SARAH nee MITCHELL MARRIED in SILKSTONE, YORKSHIRE in 1812. I have researched the PRIEST family since their arrival in N.Z. and am in contact with most living members of the family. A recent family reunion has created an interest in discovering our ENGLISH roots .The family of THOMAS and SARAH PRIEST was very large and overlapped that of JOHN and DEBORAH PRIEST.It is presumed that there were many family still living in GLOSSOP or environs in 1863. It would be a privilege to make contact with any of their descendants and to share information.

  • I am researching our local Settlers Cemetery here in Clareville, Carterton. New Zealand. Many of them are from the home country, and some from Derbyshire, so if anyone has an ancestor who came out to this area in 1850+ please contact http://www.geocities.com/carterton_historical_society/ especially interested if anyone came from the area of the Dalefield Mine near Wirksworth. As one of our local areas is called Dalefield, and I am trying, with difficulty as to the reason, I reckon because one of the settlers was from this area at home, other meanings, Dale, hill etc... who knows, I will eventually get to the bottom of it! It is also a surname, but, made up!!! One would think it a name, but no, look on any web search.....good hunting. Pentony. We did have Dalefield Dairy Company, now defunct. Dalefield Hall. Dalefield School still there and functioning, Its a dairy farming area near the Tararua's

  • THOMAS & ANNA FOX (Rutley, Derbyshire)
  • Posted by: Esther Doyle Read on the 28th April 2001
  • I have been unable to locate Rutley on any map of Derbyshire, nor do I know what parish it was located in?   In about 1860, Thomas and Anna (or Ann) Fox left England and settled in Plymouth Township, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, USA. Their place of origin is given as Rutley, Derbyshire in H.E. Hayden, Genealogical and Family History of Wyoming and Lackawanna Valleys Pennsylvania (1906, The Lewis Publishing Co., New York, page 336). They bought land in the township in 1860. Hayden gives Thomas's occupation as farmer. Thomas died sometime between 1860 and 1870. Anna Fox remarried, she is listed on the 1870 Pennsylvania census as Anna Daniels, age 49; placing her birth date in about 1821. She was a widow, living with her sons, David and William, and her recently widowed daughter, Alice Fox Perkins (as well as Alice's two children, Mary Ann and William Thomas Perkins. Alice would have a third child, Harry Perkins on 11 July 1870). Thomas and Anna Fox had at least five children:  Alice Fox, 5 February 1843 - 4 July 1893, married 1) Henry Perkins, 2) John Rodgers. Alice and Henry Perkins settled in Illinois, after his death she returned to Pennsylvania and moved in with her mother and two brothers. She remarried in Plymouth and continued to live there until her death in 1893; Samuel Fox, born 18 August 1845, married Sarah Bailey, settled in Virden, Illinois; David Fox, born 18 November 1848 - 12 February 1891, he was killed in an explosion in a coal mine in Luzerne County, married Jeannette Lewis of Plymouth. This branch of the family was Primitive Methodists, we have Jeannette's hymn book for this denomination;  Joseph Fox, 12 April 1851 - 16 January 1854, buried in Derbyshire?  William Fox, born 24 March 1856, married Sarah Deets, settled in Bracerville, Illinois.  If you are able to help please contact me..

  • WILLIAM & HONOUR BURLEY, or their siblings (Notts & Derbys)
  • Posted by [email protected] on Sunday 11th March 2001
  • William was born in 1791 (died California 1861), and Honour (birth name unknown) was born in 1799 (died California 1871). Their daughter, Elizabeth (born 1832), was one of my paternal great grandmothers; it's possible she had older siblings who remained in the UK when she and her parents emigrated to America.
  • Elizabeth married Edward Robson, presumably in 1858 (my grandmother, Josephine, was born August 2, 1859). As one of the earliest settlers of Colma, CA, Edward merited a biographical sketch in the History of San Mateo County. The sketch states he and his parents emigrated from Manchester to the US, arriving in 1840, settling in Wisconsin, then traveling via the isthmus to CA, where they landed in San Francisco in July, 1858.I've been told that many Burleys hail from Derbyshire or Nottinghamshire. (I also understand that Burleigh and Burlly are alternative spellings.)

Beginning with John & Doritha Adams, their children, Thomas, 09/14/1628, Robert, 04/24/1630, Ellen, 02/11/1633 and John,, 06/28/1635. Thomas married Isabel ? and had Robert. Robert married Lydia Withers and had William. William married Sarah Yates and had Robert. Robert married Elizabeth Brunt and had Robert. This Robert came to America. He married Sidney Manderson 04/13/1822. Many other children but these are the direct relations. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone. Thanks in advance for any information you may be able to provide. Pictures of their gravesites would be so appreciated and cost refunded. Linda.
