  • Looking for ancestors of Peter CATTERALL of Lancashire (born circa 1838-1840)
  • Posted by Helen Grant on 28th October 2003
  • I am looking for information about the ancestors of my Great Grandfather, Peter CATTERALL, who as a young child migrated to Australia between 1842 and 1851, with his parents and siblings. I have two birth records that fit the time he was born in Lancashire -1838-1840. Peter CATTERALL born 4th March 1839 at Hulme. Mother Sarah Ann OAKES, Father Peter CATTERALL - joiner of Baxter Street, Hulme, District Chorlton. Peter CATTERALL born 13th October 1838 Heath Charnock, District Chorley. Mother Rachel HITCHIN, Father Richard CATTERALL Quarryman. This family also lived in Chorley at Fish Barn?? and the Toll Gate. On a recent trip to Chorley I found where the Toll Gate used to be (thanks to the people in the library) and the old Fish Ponds?? In some respects this entry seems to be the one that fits but there is that element of doubt. I would appreciate any information. Many thanks Helen Grant.

  • Looking for info. regarding Reginald Laurence Reuben SMITH, also known as COOKE
  • Posted by Victoria Birch on the 1st September 2003
  • I am looking for information about my Grandfather (my mothers father) the name we knew him under was Reginald Laurence Reuben SMITH. He was apparently born June 18th 1910 (but there are too many Reginalds to order all certificates, none with those middle names on the index I used) He died 20th July 1986. His mother was an Effie COOKE but thats all I know of her except her family could possibly have been gypsys or first home dwellers. His father is named as William SMITH on his marriage certificate to my Nan. Reginald was in the Navy during WW2, but he may have been using the name COOKE then. He claimed to have been born in London, but I know he lived in the Norfolk/Suffolk area where I believe he had a family using the name COOKE. He could have also used variations of his first name and the names COOKE and SMITH and he was known to change his birth date (when he felt the need) Any information would be gratefully recieved.Thank you, Victoria Birch

  • Looking for info. regarding George William GOODWIN & his sister Alice Sarah GOODWIN
  • Posted by Diana Jahn on August 25th 2003
  • At my mum's request, I looked up her Dad, George (William) GOODWIN on the 1901 census. We had believed he was a Barnardo boy in England. However, I traced him to St Anne & Josephs orphanage in Farnborough, Kent aged 8. There is no knowledge of him having been adopted and his life up until he met my Gran is a mystery; Gran had been dead for near 30 years. A surprise to us all is a sister called Alice Sarah GOODWIN in the orpanage home, at the same time. I have tried to follow up her life since then and have found nothing. So, one line of thought is she may have been adopted and that is what we are keen to learn. The information I have is: Alice Sarah, the parents were George and Sarah Ann GOODWIN. The parents were married in All Saints, Deptford, Kent 16th May, 1875 and Alice Sarah was christened same church 10th. April, 1892. Incidentally, I cannot find deaths for any of the above named ancestors or a marriage for Alice. Sincerely hoping there is information somewhere. Diana Jahn, Inverness-shire

We do know they were Presbyterians, and John was a blacksmith, we have a letter that follows and the only contact we have with Ireland, and are trying to locate church records for John and Mary.

(Addressed) To Mr. John Stuart, America

You might send a letter with him to me telling me how you are situate in life & health & circumstances I am now got to my 77th year of age. Thank you for your kind letter of invitation I have now got on a English Acre at 20 shill a year rent and lives poor enough, how I shall succeed I do not know. I have a natural daughter who ministers much to my assistance. Now you write to Jenny and Harry and let them know my poor condition, I sometimes think they are poor too of which I would be good well satisfy if you knew their circumstances to let me know (if you write to me) our Summer has been a dry one which has affected our potato crops much for the worse our oats are thin but is very hearty and productive of meal all is cut down here now I may say DOUGHERTY is no more since your Father died, and now my old friend as it probably we may never see other in this life I hope we will where sorrow will have an end the Lord be with your spirit Amen. Write to me with James whilst I remain your affectionate friend till death. (Signed) Pat MARLEY.

  • We are not sure of the spelling of Ballsmore as it was written in script, could be Ballimore, Ballismore, Balismore, etc... In the letter it would appear that Mr. MARLEY knew Johns father, and a Mr.John FLACK was someone with power and wealth.
  • Do you know any one who could help us make the connection with Johns or Marys family in Ireland/Scotland? Many Thanks, Larry D. Stewart - Kansas City.

  • Im looking for any descendants of Charles DORAN b.1817 Ireland - and Eliza FIRTH b.1818 Huddersfield, they were married in Manchester Cathedral, July 1838. I have a copy of their marriage certificate which shows their fathers' names & Charles father is also called Charles. I estimate this Charles to be born around the 1790's possibly earlier. Charles & Eliza had six children, Emma b.1832, William b.1840, Charles b.1843, John b.1846, Samuel b.1849 and Edward b.1852. Charles born in 1843 had 4 children, Mary Ann b.1865-1934, Joseph 1871-1919, Charles b.1874 and Thomas b.1875. I could go on to present day but the list is endless. I'm sure if there is anyone out there that knows anything they would probably have come across one or two of these names. I'm desperate to find further back to the 1790's and beyond. Thanks.
