Jeremiah BRANDRETH - The Nottingham Man

Attended the 6^th meeting held at Asherfield Barn on Tuesday the 5^th of June at 10 o�clock at night. - Was bought by Thomas Bacon* stated to the meeting that the secret committee was to calculate the quantity of arms in the possession of persons in the different parishes where they resided & others. This man addressed the meeting explained plan of intended operations & stated that Monday night the 9^th June at 10 o�clock was fixed for the the rising. He was to be chief conductor of the mob to Nottingham. [A. Booth]

Slept at the White Horse public house Pentrich on the 5^th was at Laban Taylors of Swanwick, on the 6^th and slept at Luke Abels of Heage on Saturday night June 7^th. [A. Booth] [James Booth]

At the meeting at the White Horse on Sunday the 8^th and furnished Joseph Weightman with credentials to take to Nottingham. [A. Booth] [J. Cope] [J. Fletcher]

Produced a map of England to the company at the White Horse, and pointed out different places on it, on which it was supposed the insurgents were to go. [J. Cope] [A. Booth]

At Wingfield about 9 o�clock on Monday night June 9^th. [W. Turner] [Joseph Turner]

Was with the mob in a close in which there is a barn near Wingfield Park head and had a gun which he was loading on Monday night June 9^th about 10 o�clock. [T.Turner] [W. turner] [Isaac Ludlam Jnr]

Went with the mob to James Hardwicks, Henry Tomlinson, Elijah Halls & Mr. Henry Bestwicks, from each of whose houses they took a gun. [T. Turner]

Went to Mr. Hepworths and shot his servant man. [T.Turner]

Proceeded to Pentrich Lane End and to Pentrich, Butterley &c. [T. Turner]

He and William Turner went into several houses in Pentrich & brought both men & arms out. [T.Turner]

At Mr. Samuel Fletchers of Pentrich about 10 o�clock on Tuesday morning the 10^th June, threatened to shoot William Shipman his servant, if he did not deliver up his Masters gun and go with them and acknowledged his having shot one man. [William Shipman] [Joseph Wilkinson]

At Raynors near Langley Mill and threatened to shoot Raynor for refusing to go with the mob & his man was taken by violence, this was about 7 o�clock on Tuesday morning. [H. Hole]

Proceeded to Eastwood when they began to drop off & threatened to shoot Henry Hole for leaving the ranks. [H. Hole]

He was armed with a gun & a pistol at Pentrich Lane End after he had shot Mr. Hepworths man. The pistol he carried in a belt. [James shill] [Samuel Levers] [William Wheatcroft]

Took a Galloway out of a stable at Pentrich & ordered it to be saddled saying he had a expedition to send to Nottingham & George Weightman being thought by him to be the most fitting man mounted the Pony & road away. [James Hill]

At Butterley he seized a young man with an ass & obliged him to go with them. [James Hill]

Threatened to shoot Mr. Hall of South Wingfield, if he did not give up his son. [E. Hall] [W. Booth]

Said to Richard Bromley of South Wingfield �that if he did not go & do as they did he would put a bullet through him�. [Richard Bromley]

Was very active at Codnor &c . Forming & ordering the men to march. [R. Wragg] [W. Young] [W. Topham]

Was at Ripley, Langley Mill, Eastwood &c. carried a brass pistol & offered some powder in a bottle & a horn & bullets which he had loose in his pocket, to Edward Moore for him to carry till they were wanted. [Edward Moore]

Was at Mr George Raynors near Langley Mill at the head of about 400 men whom he halted there & he & William Turner were very violent in endeavoring to force Mr Raynor to leave his home & join them. [George Raynor]

Was at Butterley works between 3 & 4 o�clock on Tuesday morning at the head of about 100 rebels armed with guns, pikes, scythes fixed in shafts, swords & forks & halted them in front of Mr Jessops offices & demanded his men. [Joseph Thorpe]

Was with his Party about 4 o�clock on Tuesday morning at Joseph Thorpes, the sign of the Glasshouse in Codnor. Demanded admittance into the house & bread & cheese & ale on a bill being delivered to him by the landlord amounting to £1..8d.. he said �If we offer you a Bank of England Bill it will b of no use now� - & the bill was not paid.
