1911 UK Census - Will be opened January 2012
The most important innovation made in 1911 was the use of the census to obtain more detailed information bearing on the fertility of marriage.
The 1911 Census was also the first in which machines were used for purposes of tabulation in Great Britain.
A significant consequence of the introduction of machinery was that it enabled the results of the census to be presented in greater detail than could ever have been attempted before.

Interesting article... The History of the UK Census... Excerpt:
The census is one of the key sources for the family historian.
A census reveals who was living at a particular address in a particular place on census night. Every ten years, the census provides researchers with a snapshot of individuals and families across the nation. The census shows each person's name, their relationship to the head of household, age, and much more.
Another article... British Censuses... Excerpt:
There are some isolated surviving earlier censuses for a few places in earlier years of the 1800s, (from 1801), but the first major national census of use to family historians was carried out in 1841.
Access to censuses is restricted under a 100 year rule. Therefore, the latest census that can be viewed by the public is the one for 1901.
